Australia Kicks Off 2011 Formula One Season

by F1Fan on March 20, 2011

The Melbourne Albert Park circuit will host the first race of the 2011 Formula One Season. Historically the first race of the Season Albert Park was replaced in recent years by the Bahrain Grand Prix as the season opener.

However, the Political unrest in the middle east and Bahrain in particular has caused the cancellation of this years Bahrain Grand Prix and the Australian Grand Prix will be the season opener again

Allways a favorite of many drivers and teams Albert PArk will give the first real look at how the new 2011 Formula One machines will perform.

Preseason testing in Barcelona and Jerez seems to indicate the the Red Bulls and Ferrari’s will be challenging for Pole position but the big unknown is how the new Pirelli tires will perform over the race. With the new rules the tires have been designed to wear out more quickly, just how quickly will be the issue and tire management for each team will be a key component of a winning Strategy.

This season also sees the introduction of a movable rear wing and the reintroduction of the KER’s systems although it looks as though Williams will be the only team that will be running such a system. All ready race proven by the Porshe GT3 car in last years American Le Mans Race series, the William developed system could give the team the neccessary boost in performance to become one of the front runners this season.

The big question on many Australian Formula One fans minds must be can Mark Webber finally have some luck at Albert Park, contending for the Championship throughout the 2010 F1 season Mark Webber almost pulled it off until the ultra wet conditions in Korea cost him the race and ultimately the Championship.

Can this year be the year that Mark Webber becomes the second Australian Formula One driver to become F1 World Champion since Jack Brabahm’s multiple F1 Championships in 1959, 1960 and 1966, forty five years ago.

This could be one hell of a season, I certainly hope so
