Japanese Grand Prix Qualifying Rained Off

by F1Fan on October 9, 2010

Qualifying at Suzuka for the Formula One Grand Prix of Japan was called off today because of torrential rain.

The Qualifying session will now take place in Japan on Sunday morning before the race itself. A situation that seldom happens, the last time Qualifying was postponed untill race day was all the way back in 2004.

Torrential rain descended on the Suzuka Circuit towards the end of the final practice session, and didn’t let up. Qualifying was initial delayed but finally after several hours with no improvement in the weather conditions in site the decision was made to postpone Qualifying until the morning before the race.

Throughout it all the Japanese fans hung on in the hope that Qualifying would eventually take place. After the session was cancelled the entire Red Bull team led by Sebastian Vettel came out of their garage and applauded the fans, a small gesture of thanks for those that remained in the stands during terrible conditions.

In fact conditions were so bad that the red bull engineers put together a couple of makeship boats that they raced down the flooded pit lane.

Speed channel hopefully will be broadcasting Qualifying live beginning at 9:00pm on Saturday 9th of October in California, (10:00 Central Time, 11:00 pm Eastern Time). Make sure you reset your DVR’s or cable boxes so that you don’t miss it.
