Hungarian Grand Prix Just Webberific

How does the Hungarian Grand Prix held at the notoriously hard to pass Hungaroring circuit, known within F1 circles as “Monaco without the houses” produce one of the most exciting races of the Formula One Season.

Answer: One determined Australian Red Bull Racing Driver named Mark Webber.

After Qualifying it looked as though it was going to be a Red Bull Lock out with Sebastian Vettel almost half a second Faster than his team Mate Webber and over 1.2 seconds faster than the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso.

But Racing is anything but predictable, at the Start Alonso made a fantastic start from the second row easily passing Webber into second Place and almost claiming the lead from Sebastian Vettel.

Once the first corner was over it looked very much like the Hungarian Grand Prix was going to turn into a precession with Vettel easily gaping Alonso in second place while Webber was stuck behind Alonso just in front of the Ferrari of Felipe Massa. But then everything changed.

Lap 16 saw the release of the safety car because of Debris on track from the Force India of Tonio Liuzzi. As cars streamed into the pits all hell broke loose.

Sebastian Vettel almost missed pit entry after a late call to pit, then In the panic to achieve a fast stop, the Mercedes GP team failed to secure Nico Rosberg’s right rear tire, which detached from the car as he exited his pit position, the wheel careering through the pit crews until coming to rest in the AT&T Williams Garage after being caught by one of the Williams Pit crew.

Distracted by the errant tire the Renault engineer released Robert Kubica into the oncoming path of Adrian Sutil’s Force India which collided putting both cars out of the race.

While all of this was going on Mark Webber stayed out on track on his option tires that were already meant to be past their prime claiming First place as first Vettel then Alonso pitted to go onto the harder prime tire.

I guess no-one told webber that his tires were already shotas he went on to put in a masterful drive completing another 27 laps on the soft option tire, setting the fastest lap times lap after lap. Eventually gaping the field by over 23 seconds a margin that allowed him to pit and come out easily still in first place.

The restart after the safety car caught Vettel sleeping. At the time Vettel was in second place behind Webber but he incurred a drive through penalty for falling to many car lengths behind the safety car. When this penalty was announced it looked as though the race had fallen into Alonso’s lap, Vettel could potentially come out behind Massa, and Webber still had to pit.

But the red Bull’s were just to fast, Vettel managed to put in a few fast laps so that he came out behind Alonso and Webber just stayed out literally driving the race of his life driving away from alonso at almost one second per lap until he built a lead large enough to allow webber to Pit and still come out in first place.

An incredible driving performance that was just bloody Webberific.
