Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying – Red Bull Domination

by F1Fan on May 8, 2010

For the second time in as many Grand Prix weekends Red Bull Racing completely dominated all three sessions of Qualifying at the Spanish Grand Prix today.

In the final session the race for Pole position was just a fight between team mates Vettel and Weber, with Webber setting fastest time of all qualifying sessions on his final lap breaking the 1:20 barrier with a time of 1:19.995. Good enough to claim the third Pole position of MArk Webber’s F1 career.

Vettel was only just 0.106 seconds behind, while the next fastest competitor Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren was almost a second off the pace (+0.834 seconds). A huge margin in Formula One, especially when you consider that Red Bull have yet to introduce the “Blown Rear Wing” concept on the RB6 chassis which would improve straight line speed. It just goes to show the excellent aerodynamic and handling capabilility of the Adrian Newey designed car he really is a master of F1 design. Talking about the differential in performance between the Red Bulls and his McLaren durin the post qualifying press conference a surprised Lewis Hamilton had this to say:

“I don’t think anyone expected them (Webber & Vettel) to be so fast this weekend. However, we knew that they would be quick but that is quite a decent gap, but we will continue to push and just focus on the areas that we know where we are weakest and try and close the gap. But it’s great to be up there. At least we can fight. They’re probably not as quick as us down the straight which is a bonus, so we will see how the start goes tomorrow.

So based upon thequalifying results the Grid would would look like this:

However Vitaly Petrov and Karun Chandhock may be penalized 5 grid spots because they both modified their transmissions, and following Qualifying the Virgin Racing team were penalized 5 grid spots by the stewards because they had failed to inform the FIA which ratio’s they intended to use within the alloted time window. So the grid positions at the back of the grid may change around somewhat.

Pole Position at the Circuit De Catalunya historically has been very important for the last nine years the race has been won from Pole Position so it will be interesting to see if Webber can make it ten in a row. It won’t be an easy task with his team mate alongside and Hamilton and local favorite Fernando Alonso on the second row.
