Jerez Final Day First Test – Virgin Finally Sets Reasonable Time

by F1Fan on February 13, 2010

Yet again rain effected testing at Jerez today with heavy rain during the morning, luckily the circuit dried out just after lunch allowing most teams to run the balance of their testing program for the final day of the current test session.

Virgin Racing finally managed to put some laps on their car and nothing fell off, so it looks like they have fixed the earlier problem with the front wing. While the number of laps Lucas Di Grassi put on the VR-01 was the fewest by far of any team today, the car itself seemed to working well and managed a respectable time in the high 1:22’s beating the Toro Rosso of Jamie Alguersuari (who yesterday set fastest lap) by over a second. Much work still needs to be done but at least Virgin Racing now have a bunch of data to work with.

Just before the end of testing Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren put in a really quick lap setting fastest lap time of all four days at Jerez. Closely followed by Adrian Sutil’s Force India VJM03 and then the FW32 Williams of Rubens Barrichello who had to terminate his final test run early due to a gearbox issue. Commenting on his test performance Rubens Barrichello explained:

The car has performed well these past two days and we’ve discovered some interesting things which will help us move it forward. I was hoping to go for a performance run at the end of the day because the car felt good, but unfortunately my session was cut short. There’s work to do in terms of improving performance, but I’m happy with the results that are coming out.

The next Formula One test session will also be at Jerez and starts next wednesday February 17th, It will be interesting to see how Virgin compare to the other new guys – Lotus Racing, who should be attending the next test

Still no official word from USF1 and Campos Meta 1 as to when we will be able to see their new cars on track. USF1 will be testing first in the US and they have been remarkably quiet so far this month, I for one hope that they are on track to begin testing soon.

Rumors continue to circulate around the fate of Campos Meta 1, earlier this week Spanish Newspaper AS reported that the anticipated investment by South African businessman Tony Teixeira, had fallen through and that Adrian Campos would be leaving the team. According to AS the team had been rescued by Bernie Ecclestone and would become Volkswagen in 2011. Volkswagen has since denied their involvement, so who knows if Campos will be contender in 2010.
