Lotus F1 Team Ahead of Schedule

by F1Fan on January 10, 2010

Lotus F1 Racing Chief Technical Officer, Mike Gascoyne, this week confirmed that his team is making great progress on the build of its new car and is ahead of schedule in its efforts to be ready for the first Grand Prix of the 2010 F1 season in Bahrain this coming March.

“We had been looking at firing up our engine for the first time on 12th February, but with the efforts everyone’s been putting in we have now been able to bring that forward to 5th February. This is obviously a great boost for everyone involved in the team, and shows how much hard work has already gone in since we had our entry confirmed on September 12th.
“With the engine fire up date now in the diary, we are also in a position to confirm that we will be on track for the first time at the third official test at Jerez from 17th February, and then at Barcelona from 25th February. We are also aiming to run chassis two for the last two days of that Barcelona test.”

looking ahead to the forthcoming season Mike Gascoyne also announced that a major update to the car is planned for the Spanish Grand Prix in May.

“We have said we are aiming to be ahead of the new teams when we all reach Bahrain, but we would also like to be pretty close to the midfield teams after the first few races of the season. The update we have planned for Spain will see a boost in performance when we reach Barcelona which will give us the chance to start fighting with the slowest of the established teams which, given progress so far, has to be the next goal for us.”

USf1 LogoIn related News USF1 have announced that the FIA has given them special dispensation to perform inital track testing in America. The tests will be carried out at the Barber Motorsport Park beginning sometime early in February.

According to USF1’s sporting director Peter Windsor:

“We are allowed three sessions in the US, then we will ship the car to Spain to do some testing there before we fly out to Bahrain.”

If Peter Windsor is correct in his prediction of when testing will begin in the US it looks like USF1 may in fact be ahead of Lotus in the development of thier car. While annoucing that it is ahead of schedule Lotus looks like it will only begin testing at the Second test session in Jerez.

The European based teams will test at Valencia from February 1 and then head to Jerez for a four day session that gets underway on February 10th, with a second Jerez test beginning on February 17th and the final test in Barcelona beginning February 25th.
