Peter Sauber Return to F1 in 2010?

BMW Dumps Qadbak for Sauber

by F1Fan on November 27, 2009

BMW AG announced today that they have reached an agreement with Peter Sauber for Sauber’s acquisition of the former BMW Sauber F1 Team.

In doing so, BMW have terminated the planned sale to Qadbak Investment Ltd. The new contract with Peter Sauber is however contingent upon the former BMW Sauber F1 team having a place on the grid for the next F1 season.

The announcement was made by Dr Klaus Draeger, Member of BMW AG Board of Management, who stated:

“We are very happy with this solution. This fulfils the most important requirement for a successful future for the team.”

Dr Draeger went on to say:

“Our relationship with Peter Sauber has always been excellent and marked by absolute respect. We would like to express our thanks to Peter Sauber and the whole team for the excellent cooperation during the recent four years.”

In a prepared statement Peter Sauber added:

“I am very relieved that we have found this solution. It mans that we can keep the Hinwil location and the majority of the workplaces. I am convinced that the new team has a very good future in Formula One, whose current transformation with new framework conditions will benefit the private teams. Our staff here are highly competent and motivated, and I look forward to taking on this new challenge together with them. I would like to thank BMW for four shared years that have in the main been very successful.”

It is not all good news as part of the agreement the team will be restructured, with significant cuts in head count, out of the current 338 team employees only 250 or so will remain.

So now that Sauber has pulled one rabbit out of the hat, he has to work his magic on the next big task of securing a slot on the 2010 grid, that may be an even bigger challenge. At least Sauber is a well respected known entity, unlike the mysterious Qadbak Investment group, so, perhaps some of the prior objections will disappear.

We won’t have to wait long, apparently the FIA will confirm the entrants for the 2010 season early next week.
