Red Bull Racing Finish One Two in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

by F1Fan on November 2, 2009

Sebastian Vettel won the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the spectacular Yaz Marina Circuit.

In the first ever Afternoon/Evening F1 race and the first ever F1 race at Yaz Marina the Red Bull cars of Vettel and Weber were the class of the field.

Starting on Pole Lewis Hamilton in the Mclaren got away cleanly and as soon as he hit the strait disappeared into the distance, but it soon became clear that Vettel and Weber were quicker in the first and third sectors while Hamilton had the advantage in Sector 2 where he could use his KERS system to great effect on the longest straight at any Formula One circuit.

At one point Hamilton had increased his gap to Vettel to over 1.7 seconds but then, Vettel and Weber started to close the gap, and by the time Hamilton pitted the gap was under 0.5 seconds. Vettel was running longer on fuel and put in a few very fast laps, managing to gain enough time to come out in front of Hamilton after his pit stop. Shortly thereafter it became evident why Hamilton’s pace had dropped off when he retired with rear brake failure, the first time in Hamilton’s F1 career that he has retired from a mechanical failure.

Vettel went on to dominate the race pulling away from his team mate Mark Webber and securing the runner up position in the Driers championship behind Jenson Button and in front of Ruben Barrichello who damaged his car at the First turn running into MArk Webber.

During the later part of the race Mark Weber came under attack from Jenson Button who had been closing on Webber by more than 0.5 seconds per lap. While most of the Grand Prix was pretty uneventful the fight between Webber and Button during the last few laps was Formula One racing at its best, with Button challenging on almost every corner, very nearly overtaking on several occasions only to have Mark Webber reclaim the lead. A great finish to a really spectacular event.
