Kobayashi to Race in Abu Dhabi

Kobayashi’s very impressive debut at the last Grand Prix in Brazil, where he qualified 11th in terrible weather conditions and finished 9th just out of the points after a terrific battle with World Champion Jenson Button has lead Toyota to name Kobiyashi to drive in this weekends Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Kobayashi will replace the injured Timo Glock in the second Toyota alongside Jarno Trulli.

Timo Glock was hoping to have recovered enough be able to race at the new Yas Marina Circuit, but unfortunately the back injury he suffered in Japan is more serious than initially diagnosed.

Following a meeting with Timo and his management, Panasonic Toyota President John Howett said:

“We feel genuinely sorry for Timo that his season, which has included two impressive podium finishes, is ending in this way. Having discussed the medical advice with Timo and his management, the team has decided to take no risk and to put Kamui in the car. Kamui performed well in Brazil in difficult circumstances so we are happy to ask him to once again deputise.”

Upon finding out that he will be driving Car 10 for the second time in as many races Kobayashi commented:

“I am really looking forward to my second Grand Prix and I want to make the most of this unexpected chance. I didn’t know the track in Brazil and that was a little bit of a disadvantage because almost all the other drivers had some experience of it. But that’s not the case in Abu Dhabi; this is a new track for everyone so that should help me. I am also more familiar with the car now, as well as other procedures during a race weekend like pit stops and the two tyre compounds, so I expect to be more competitive in Abu Dhabi. I am sure the car will be strong and I will do everything I can to try to score my first points in Formula 1. Of course it will be extremely difficult because the field is very strong and this is just my second Grand Prix but I will give my all.”

After a lack luster performance in GP2 this season Kobayashi surprised everyone in Brazil showing up more than a few seasoned Formula One veterans, with the Yaz Marina circuit being new to everyone, he stands a good chance of doing even better in Abu Dhabi. The Championships are already decided so it will be good to have an underdog to cheer for, it would be great if he can score some points in only his second Grand Prix.
