Inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Sold Out!!!

by F1Fan on October 26, 2009

The inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be held this coming weekend at the brand new Yaz Marina circuit.

The Economic downturn doesn’t seem to have reached the Middle East ,with tickets at the new circuit selling between 1200 – 2500 AED ($325 – $680) the Grand Prix is already sold out. With over 50,000 tickets sold conservative estimates put ticket sales in the 16 – 25 Million US Dollars range, not a bad start..already.

Located on one of the 200 hundred islands that make up Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Yaz Island  is located 25 minutes east of Abu Dhabi City itself and 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Yaz Marina is the newest circuit on the Formula One schedule and by all accounts an incredible feat of Engineering. Phase 1 of the much larger larger Yaz Island Development the Yaz Marina Circuit while initially conceived as a street circuit evolved during the design process into a purpose built permanent motor-sport destination capable of hosting Formula 1 and other motor-sport series, Drag Racing and Kart Racing.

Yas-Marina-Circuit-Long-Track 220The circuit itself is capable of multiple configurations. The F1 Grand Prix will be run on the full 3.4 Mile circuit (5.55Km) comprised of 21 turns (9 right & 12 left) boasting the longest straight in Formula One with predicted top speed reaching 317 km/h and an estimated lap time of around 1 minute 40 seconds.

Yas-Marina-Circuit-Short-Tracks 220The  track can also be configured into shorter 1.9 mile (3.15 km) and 1.46 mile (2.36 km) fully independent circuits enabling Yaz Marina to hold two separate events at the same time.

The design of Yaz Marina is the result of a collaboration between Philippe Gurdijan in conjunction with ALDAR the overall developers of Yaz Island and the track builders along with Herman Tilke and architect Ulrich Merres of the now famous F1 track designers, Tilke GmbH.

One of the many unique features of the Yaz Marina circuit is the 5 star 500 room Yas Hotel which actually straddles the circuit and is covered by a unique skin made up of 4800 LED panels that allow the structure to change color after dark. Which should provide an interesting backdrop the Grand Prix which is scheduled to run into the evening hours.
