Following his accident in Japan Glock was complaining of pain in his leg and lower back, initially diagnosed with just a minor cut to his leg the prognosis looked good, but further examinations upon his return to Germany also revealed a cracked Vertebrae which will prevent him from racing in Brazil.

Presently it is also unclear if Glock will be able to participate in the final race of the season at the new circuit in Abu Dhabi to be held in November.

Third driver Kamui Kobayashi will replace Glock at Interlagos. In fact Kobayashi almost stood in for Glock at Suzuka as Glock was ill just before the race weekend preventing him from taking part in Friday Practice. Following Glock’s accident Toyota nominated Kobayashi to stand in for Glock in the race itself. Unfortunately Kobayashi fell foul of the FIA rules as he had not participated in the final practice session on Saturday, a precondition to be able to participate in the actual race.

Commenting on the decision to replace Glock Toyota F1 President John Howett said:

“Obviously everyone in the team is very disappointed and feels for Timo; we wish him a very speedy recovery. Based on the initial diagnosis, we fully expected Timo to return in Brazil but unfortunately a different injury has been revealed which prevents that. He will remain in Germany to recover and we hope he can recuperate in time for Abu Dhabi, although at this stage the situation is not clear.

Kamui was the natural choice to step in and he proved in Suzuka that he is capable of holding his own. It is a difficult task for him but he knows the team will give him its complete support and we know he is motivated to make the most of this unexpected opportunity.”

This must be a big blow for Glock who was fighting to retain his racing seat at Toyota for next season, this injury must make his position with the team even more tenuous.
