Vettel Takes Pole in Incident Filled Qualifying at Suzuka

Sebastian Vettel waa the class of the field during an incident filled final Qualifying and prior final practice session which saw a total of 6 crashes, 5 of which bought out the Red Flag suspending the sessions.

Through it all an unflappable Vettel set fastest laps in all three sessions of Qualifying with only Trulli and Hamilton coming close to his times.

Final practice prior to the beginning of qualifying saw Vettels team mate Mark Webber crash heavily into the tire wall at the Degner Curve (Turn 9) sustaining massive damage to his car, requiring the chassis to be replaced and preventing Webber from participating in Qualifying, so he will start the race from Pit lane. This was a major blow to Red Bulls chances of winning the Constructors Championship.

The Degner curve continued to claim victims throughout qualifying, Buemi crashed out their in Q1, but was able to return later in the session to set 5th fastest time for the session a remarkable achievement, Followed by Alguesuari in Q2 who has a masssive wreck driving head on into the tire wall, slow to get out of the car he was taken away by the medical team but was basically uninjured.

Timo Glock was the next to crash in Q2 bring out the Red Flag yet again, Glock was not as lucky as Algusuari and had to be lifted out of the car and later taken by Helicoptor to Hospital to fix a cut on his leg.

Then just before the end of Q2 Buemi drifts wide coming out of turn 14 and crashes into the armco detroying his front wing and ripping various parts of the right side of his Toro Rosso, amazingly he escaped serious injury and managed to nurse his car back to pit Lane. Buemi’s Crash bought out the Yellow flag when Alonso, Button, Barrichello and Sutil were on their hot laps and it is unclear if they will be penalised by the Stewards for failing to slow down.

So if this wasn’t bad enough Heikki Kovalainen goes off at the Degner curve early in Q3 bringing out the Red Flag once more and basically cutting short the final qualifying for most of the other competitors. Once again Vettel set fastest lap on his first and only hot lap of the session.
