McLaren’s Remarkable Increase in Pace (Part 1)

by F1Fan on August 26, 2009

It was only a few races ago after being eliminated in the first qualifying session at the British Grand Prix that a frustrated Lewis Hamilton characterized the McLaren MP4-24 as “a bit of a nightmare to drive” and when asked if he saw any light at the end of the tunnel replied that “I don’t think it is going to be with this car”.

Fast forward two races to Hungary where Hamilton handily wins the race and his teammate came a respectable 5th position and then on to Valencia last weekend where the McLarens continued to show competitive performance, qualifying One, Two on the grid.

In a season that has no testing allowed between races this increase in performance is truly remarkable and is a testament the the tremendous effort behind the scenes that the McLaren Team members have put forth.

McClaren recently released a series of video interviews with Martin Whitmarsh (Team Principal), Pat Fry (Chief Engineer), Jonathon Neale (Managing Director), Paddy Lowe (Engineering Director) which give insight into the challenges involved in developing the MP4-24 into the competitive Formula One racing car that it is today.

The video’s make interesting viewing especially if you have a bit of an engineering bias. The first two interviews in the series are included below:

Look for Part 2 of this Article to watch the Jonathon Neale and Paddy Lowe videos.
