British Grand Prix Qualifying – What happened to Lewis?

by F1Fan on June 20, 2009

For the third straight race Lewis Hamilton failed to make it out of the first qualifying session and his team mate Heikki Kovalainen only just manage to squeeze into Q2 but made it no further.

Lewis’s final qualifying lap was interrupted when Adrian Sutil in the Force India VJM02 had a heavy crash into the tire wall stopping the first qualifying period with only 24 seconds remaining. However even if he had been able to complete the lap Lewis admitted that it was doubtful that he would have been fast enough to move on to Q2 .

Lewis was fighting with MP4-24 handling for most of the weekend and with the last set of tires had some serious over steer. In an interview just after elimination he characterized his car as “a bit of a nightmare to drive” and when asked if he saw any light at the end of the tunnel replied that “I don’t think it is going to be with this car”. Not a particularly good sign for the rest of  McLaren’s season.
